Rediscovered Gems: Premieres of Newly Published Works by Florence Price
Members of the Baylor University Chapter of Music Teachers National Association premiere 20 works by Florence Price for solo piano. The pieces were first published in a new book by Associate Professor of Piano Michael Clark, D.M.A.
Price (1887–1953) was a remarkable American composer who has only just begun to receive widespread acclaim. She became a leading artistic force in the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s and 1940s. Despite her trailblazing milestones, only a fraction of Price’s music was published in her lifetime, and while some manuscripts were preserved in libraries, they only hinted at the full range of her output. In 2009 a couple made a surprising discovery while renovating a neglected house in St. Anne, IL: hundreds of Price’s manuscripts were boxed up inside! These works are now maintained in the Special Collections of the University of Arkansas, and many of them have finally been published, though a significant number have still not reached the public.
This event is free and open to the public. Students receive recital credit.
